John 5 verses 17 through 24 is important for us today to know who Christ is so that we have more than just a mental abundance of facts. It’s important for us to know and to grasp who He truly is and not just give a mental ascent to, “Yeah, OK. I know about Jesus. I know He did this. I know He did that.”, because He’s going to give a testimony of who He is, how great He is, the honor that is due Him, and that we need to follow along with what He’s teaching here and give Him that honor, give Him that love, that respect and that fear. A former chaplain of the federal penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, was sort of walking down the street in a certain city feeling low and depressed and worried about life in general. We’re doing a study here on Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman at the well. There are certain motivations that she had in her life. There are certain motivations we have in our life, even the sluggard in Proverbs has a motivation to do as little work as possible and second Timothy talks about many how they are motivated by pleasure, the things of this world. Many organizations and businesses exist to improve people’s qualities of life. That’s their mission. [...]

This morning we learn of Jesus going to Samaria to speak and witness to a woman at the well and in so doing He breaks several social barriers and prejudices. The Jews frowned upon the Samaritans but we see that Jesus doesn’t. In fact later in His ministry when He teaches on loving others He uses a Samaritan as an example, in contrast to the apathetic Jewish Levites and priests. [...]

As you know the major theme of John chapter 3 is the necessity of being born again and believing in Christ for eternal life. We remember from last week that Jesus did not come to condemn us but to rescue us because we’re already condemned. We are all under the wrath of God from birth. We see in our passage that Christians should follow the example set by Jesus and John and avoid competing with one another in the ministry, as born again Christians who are following Christ. [...]
